In April 2015, MPI commissioned the NZAGRC and PGgRc to organise a national workshop on our current understanding of N efficiency in pastoral systems.
The aim of the workshop was to bring together New Zealand’s leading nitrogen researchers to present their understanding of N efficiency in pastoral systems and to map their current work in integrated frameworks that represents the pathways within the nitrogen cycle at four different levels: national, catchment, farm and urine patch.
Presenters were also asked to identify the systems impacts and potential unintended consequences of proposed manipulations, and to identify where in the system the biggest gains can be made.
Following this overview, all attendees (including policy and industry stakeholders) then discussed potential knowledge gaps and new opportunities with particular focus on nitrate leaching and N2O emissions and their mitigation.
This page compiles the outcomes of the workshop, including the agenda, all presentations, an overview of the proposed interventions mapped within the four frameworks, and a summary list of key gaps and opportunities.
