Expressions of interest are now open for Pūtea Rangahau – Tuku Haurehu a Ahuwhenua 2025! Pūtea Rangahau is focused on supporting research that addresses the particular challenges of reducing agricultural greenhouse gas emissions from Māori land.

The New Zealand Agricultural Greenhouse Gas Research Centre coordinates and funds research into reducing agricultural greenhouse gas emissions. Given the scale and unique operating environment of Māori agribusiness, the NZAGRC funds programmes that align with our Māori Research Strategy.

The vision of the Strategy is: A lower emissions, sustainable food system built on a deep relationship of respect and reciprocity with te Taiao and where the full diversity of Māori landowners,agribusinesses and their iwi, hapū and whanau can thrive.

Pūtea Rangahau – Tuku Haurehu a Ahuwhenua is our main investment mechanism in this area. Pokapū Waro, the Māori research strategy team of the NZAGRC is the rōpu kaiwhakahaere for Pūtea Rangahau. Pokapū Waro is supported by Toihau an independent group of experts in Māori agribusiness and research that provide guidance to the NZAGRC.

2025 Funding Round

Funding is available for research projects that address one or more of the following areas:

  • Information that leads to a greater understanding of agricultural greenhouse gas emissions from Māori land
  • Holistic farm systems research that identifies opportunities for reduced agricultural greenhouse gas emission on Māori land, and ideally that is:
  • Led or informed by mātauranga Māori and/or kaupapa Māori knowledge systems
  • Underpinned by the principles of kaitiakitanga/tangata tiaki/te Ao Māori
  • Research that identifies, develops, collates and/or communicates tools and technologies for Māori landowners to reduce their agricultural greenhouse gas emissions
  • Initiatives that lead to greater understanding and participation by Māori in agricultural greenhouse gas reduction activities
  • Research on protecting or enhancing soil carbon sequestration on Māori land

Two funding options are available:

  • Seed funding - up to $50k to support development of a detailed project proposal; and
  • Project funding - more substantive funding for up to three years

EOIs close at 12pm. EOIs must be submitted to fund@nzagrc.org.nz

Late April 

EOIs are checked for completeness and whether they meet the criteria

May  

Preliminary consideration of complete proposals by Toihau and NZAGRC

May  

Independent evaluation of applications by Assessment Panel

Late May/June  

NZAGRC notifies short-listed applicants and works with them to develop detailed, proposals

June/July  

Project proposals are reviewed by the Assessment Panel and Toihau and final recommendations made to the NZAGRC Governance Group for funding approval

July-October 

Approved projects move to final contract negotiation and once fully signed, projects commence
