Plantain, a perennial herb with a deep and fibrous root system, offers multiple agronomic and environmental advantages. Recent research suggests that including plantain in pasture systems may mitigate nitrous oxide emissions via several mechanisms. However, findings remain variable across studies, with results ranging from significant emission reductions to negligible or even opposite effects. This webinar will explore the current evidence, mechanisms, and practical implications of using plantain in pasture systems as a mitigation tool, featuring the latest updates from leading researchers in New Zealand and Ireland.

This webinar is part of the 2025 Ag Emissions Centre State of the Science webinar series and a collaborative effort between Teagasc and the Ag Emissions Centre.

Don’t miss the chance to gain valuable knowledge from top scientists in the field.

About the Ag Emissions Centre-Teagasc relationship

The Ag Emissions Centre and Teagasc have committed to ongoing collaboration, information sharing and supporting research and capability building to build stronger, more connected work programmes that deliver globally applicable solutions for farmers and growers.

About the Ag Emissions Centre

The Ag Emissions Centre was created in 2009 to build on existing research, partnering with others to bring cost-effective, simple solutions to New Zealand farms and contribute world-leading results to the international science community.

New Zealand is a world leader in research aimed at quantifying and mitigating agricultural greenhouse gas emissions, the Ag Emissions Centre is at the centre of this effort and works internationally to share knowledge and expertise.

About Teagasc

Teagasc, the Agriculture and Food Development Authority, is the national body providing integrated research, advisory and training services to the agriculture and food industry and rural communities in Ireland. The Teagasc Climate Centre is a virtual centre to co-ordinate agricultural climate and biodiversity research and innovation across Teagasc. It focuses on the development and implementation of technologies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and enhance biodiversity. The Climate Centre supports and facilitates the Irish agriculture sector to meet its commitments in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and restoring biodiversity.
