NZAGRC State of science webinar series. Future Farm System: Taking action behind the farm gate
When: Friday 27th September 2024, 11.00 am to 12:00pm NZT (via Zoom)
Presenter: Erica van Reenen, AgFirst
Chair: Naomi Parker, NZAGRC
About the webinar
This webinar discusses some of the work that has been done to-date within the Future Farm Systems programme behind the farm gate. This includes highlights from five case studies of farmers who have reduced their emissions using a range of farm system changes and land use changes. The programme is also running three farmer-led collectives, with two more being established. These groups are working on giving effect to the Zero Carbon Act while remaining financially viable as a collective. Some high-level insights from this work will be provided.
Case studies highlighted in this webinar, are featured on the Ag Matters website, a knowledge hub that features practical information, backed by science to help farmers and growers understand the effects of climate change.
This webinar is part of the 2024 “State of Science” webinar series. Upcoming topics and dates will be broadcast at www.nzagrc.org.nz/webinar
About the NZAGRC Future Farm Systems Programme
Farm systems are continually evolving to meet changing priorities. Future farm systems may look very different to those of today due to the increased emphasis on environmental outcomes. What will low-emissions primary production look like in New Zealand and what research might be required to support that?
The programme focuses on two core areas of work:
Identifying farm-level transitions needed to reduce agricultural greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to a changing climate; and
Envisioning what a low emissions future for farm systems might mean in the longer term for the primary sector and Aotearoa New Zealand’s economy and communities at large.
What is Ag Matters?
Ag Matters draws together the latest scientific knowledge, background information, resources, and case studies. This aims to help New Zealand’s primary producers and rural professionals to understand what they can do to help reduce on-farm emissions of greenhouse gases and achieve other environmental goals. Highlighting a broad range of case studies, farmers sharing with farmers the actions they’re taking, and the outcomes achieved.
Who should participate?
This webinar is relevant to researchers, farmers, rural professionals, policy advisors and anyone else involved or interested in efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from New Zealand’s primary sector.
